Kitchen Styling- A Little Goes a Long Way!

 I'm thrilled to be sharing my newly styled kitchen with you today.

We are coming up on 3 years living in our home and sadly I just recently decided to bite the bullet and give this kitchen some love.  I've been dreaming of a white kitchen, but since it's a ways away before that dream becomes a reality I decided to do some small fixes to make this a kitchen that I can love.

You can see how much a little bit went a long way in this space.  The valance and new light fixture MAKE THE SPACE in my opinion.  Adding some color and fresh flowers add so much to make this monochramtic room pop.

I've always loved the look of pendant lighting in kitchens.  Since my ceilings over my penisula aren't wired for them yet I did the next best thing and had the can light swapped out for this beauty from PROGRESS LIGHTING.  The design and bubbled glass make me happy every time I look at it and adds a little bit of class to this space.  It's beautiful quality, and I'm actually putting this same fixture in a client's kitchen!  She loved it that much after seeing it in my space.

 The valance I made with some fabric, foam board, quilt batting, a staple gun and some velcro strips.  It cost me less than $20 to complete this project!  You can look on pinterest for some great tutorials.

There you have it, just adding a little bit of color and life into this kitchen makes me love it so much more.  Grantid, I'm still dreaming of a white kitchen someday, these updates are making the wait very enjoyable. :)

Chandelier Reveal

 How gorgeous is the progress of this dining room!?  From the statement that the wall to wall qua-trefoil carpeting creates, to the airy feel the board and batten gives to the show stopping chandelier... This dining room is on its way to perfection.  Just needing a few finishing touches, but so far so good.  Completely in love with how this space has come together.

 This is the beauty that my sister in law decided on.  We had a vote in THIS POST and she went with #1.  About 65% of the voters said they'd pick #3... but she said after looking at 100's of chandelier's she knew this was the one.  Such a good call removing the mini shades.  It gives the perfect transitional feel she was after, and she is completely in love.  Couldn't ask for more than that!

 The details are so classic and timeless.  Goes perfectly with the colonial/ plantation vibe the exterior of the house gives off.  I love that it's a statement piece, yet keeps the integrity of the home.

Here is the top 5 that we narrowed it down to in the previous post.  She picked #1 shown here but removed the shades.  Like I mentioned, the majority said they'd go with 3.  That is what I was trying to talk her into.  But, I am SO happy she went with her gut and the one that spoke to her.  She has no regrets and falls in love with it every time she walks in her dining room.  It truly turned out perfectly beautiful in the space!  I am so happy for her!

Glass Table Lamps... under $100!!!

I have been working on a few design proposals and I have loved that my clients have been wanting some lighting options that are subtle, yet are statement pieces in their spaces.  Glass lamps have such class, yet are so versatile they can be a little eye candy in a casual space, or can fit right in a classy traditional space.  These babies are as transitional as they come and I am tickled pink that I was able to round up these beauties all for under $100!  Some are even under $50!  Be sure to check them out and if you love one, hurry and get it!  I cant tell you how many times lamps have sold out before my clients could snag them and I've had to look for alternate options for them.  These are my favorite glass lamps on the web for such affordable prices... win win!!!

I'm so excited about today's Friday Five!  I wanted to do something kind of fun and create a vote to help pic out the statement chandelier for this dining room in the works.  This is my brother's home.  I've been consulting my darling sister in law while they do some updates to there.  She's been having a tough time narrowing down her favorite chandelier, because let's be honest... the possibilities are endless with this kind of thing.  She knows that she wants it on the traditional side.  She wants oil rubbed bronze.  And crystals make her heart go pitter-pat...  So with those things in mind, we've narrowed it down to 5... and she would LOVE to know what's your favorite, especially which one you would put in this space!?  Scroll to the end and see our top 5 picks and, I didn't' leave you hanging,.. they are linked so you can view for purchase.

This is the gorgeous dining set they picked out from RCwilley.  They have a large family and they can't wait to break this beauty in!  And, a shout out to my sister in law's handy father!  He whipped up this beautiful board and batten over the holiday break!  Talk about a labor of love!  He also built the book cases below.  He's super man!

The Friday Five: Safavieh Dip Dye Rugs

I cannot believe how fast this month has gone by!?!?  The end of summer fun and back to school has kept me preoccupied more than I realized it would!  I now officially have a kindergartner and it has been so fun doing the mom roll this week.  But, I realized I had quite the blogging hiatus and now its time to get back in gear!  
Today I wanted to rave about the new rug that I ordered from a favorite company of mine, Safavieh.  I seem to always use at least one of their items in a design of mine and I have realized almost all the rugs I order end up being from them.  I was on the hunt for quite some time for a round rug to go under my kitchen table.  I knew it had to have some sort of a mix of color to it so that it'd be easier to hide any spills.  I found Safavieh's awesome 'Dip Dyed' Rug line and fell in LOVE.  So many beautiful options.  The movement of the pattern had me at hello.  I decided on this trellis pattern one and when I unrolled it I kid you not, I gasped in excitement.  It is BEAUTIFUL in person.  I didn't edit these pictures to keep the integrity of the rug.

 I wanted to show the before picture of the space.  You can see it wasn't bad, but after putting the rug down it grounds the space and makes this tiny kitchen nook seem larger and make sense.  I chose a round rug to play off of my round table and it fits perfectly in the bay.  If you are looking for a round rug just google 'Safavieh 7' round rug' and you'll get several pattern options.

 I love the quality, it is a wool blend.  The colors are gorgeous and after I scotch guarded it, it seems to be durable.  I was able to just wipe up a few spills already (thanks to my cute kiddos)  Oh, and it has become my dog's new favorite place to sleep.  So, you know its comfortable.

The Friday Five: White Night Stands

 I have had the fun opportunity to work on a few master bedrooms lately.  In all of these my clients have asked to brighten up their spaces.  One way to do so was replacing their dark, larger scale night stands with smaller scale, lighter and airier white ones.  I love the company Inspire Q... they have some fabulous options, and I was pleased to find out they were solid wood and had tongue and groove drawers.  Better yet... they are usually under $200! 
One fun way to change up a white night stand is just swapping out the hardware that comes with it.  Take the below photo.  I swapped out the satin nickle one for these oval hammered brass ones that I picked up for $2.50 each from Hobby Lobby.  It changed the overall look of the nightstand and make them appear a lot higher end, but cost only 5 bucks.  Love it!

Today's Friday Five is all about curtains!  I posted this top left picture of the teal curtains on Instagram and I have had so many comment's asking where to find them.  So, of course I had to create a post of my tried and true all time favorite curtain panels.  Instead of  creating the normal collage image I usually do for these posts, I decided to post 5 of my favorite curtain designs for you to see them in actual spaces.  I hope you enjoy them!  Scroll to the bottom of the page and they will all be linked for you!

 I love using curtains for many reasons.  The obvious is for privacy.  However, my favorite reason for incorporating them in almost every one of my designs is I love the eye candy it creates, but more importantly, when hung properly they can make the room feel larger, and the ceilings appear taller!

Take my son's nursery... It's only an 8 foot ceiling height, but ever since I hung these so close to the ceiling, and a lot wider than the actual window it creates the illusion the window is larger and ad's a nice spacious feeling to the room.

Storage benches are such a fun and functional addition to any room.  Whether you place them in a bedroom for extra seating, a children's space for toys or use one as an ottoman in front of a sofa, they really are such great pieces!

 The bench in the above picture inspired me to write this post today...  This wall called for a bench and I was SO pleased to see it in person.  Not only does it fit the space perfectly, but the fabric, shape and pattern may have my client and myself smitten.  An after thought in the design is now our favorite part.  I've linked it below for you!

The Friday Five: Oil Rubbed Bronze Chandeliers

 I have had chandelier's on the brain the last several weeks, and while browsing I have realized I  seem to be so drawn to dark oil rubbed bronze transitional ones.  There is just something about the contrast of black in a design that I love.  Seeing them hung create such a dramatic statement I can't get enough of!

  Chandelier's are the icing on the cake in design.  You could get away with not having a decorative one put in, but when you take that extra time and money... it seems to be a subtle addition that adds such a statement.  Take these chandelier's in the above picture... The Friday Five: Cabinets

 Happy Friday, friends!  And a Happy 4th of July weekend to all.  Hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday!

Today I'm talking about side cabinets. Decorative storage is something that is a must in design, in my opinion. Smaller and a little more functional than a console table, these can be perfect in a small entry, a side table or night stand.  They can be such a great statement and the perfect first impression in a room.  Style with a lamp, picture frame and a vase with flowers and, voila, the perfect vignette!

Welcome back to this weeks Friday Five!
Today I am talking about a fave furniture item of mine- Accent Club Chairs.

 I've decided that I have a thing for accent chairs... but mainly club chairs.  I love their shape, their comfort, and their classic style.  They can be used in almost any type of design and almost every room of the house... the living room, family room, bedroom, office... they come in so many different colors and patterns,  It's no wonder why I have to incorporate at least one in every room I design.

This Elliot Chair is the first thing you see as you come into my family room, and a year and a half later, still makes my heart skip a beat!  A little secret on buying this chair.  I got about $100 off by subscribing to World Markets email list.  They layer coupons.  So not only was the chair on sale, but I had a $10 off coupon and a $10% off code.

Here are a few of my favorite's lately.  I love the classic shape of these, and love the tufts!  The colors, however, make them current and transitional.  I have used the bottom three in my designs and have personally tested out their comfort-lounge level, they are approved!

The Friday Five- Area Rugs

 Happy Friday!  I hope everyone has a great weekend celebrating their Dad's!
I have some great area rug options for you today!

Area Rugs not only ground the space, but can create such a statement in any room.  Most times seem to be the inspiration in my designs.  Whether, hardwood, tile or carpet, it's okay to use a rug in any space. I used to be scared to layer rugs over the carpet, design 101 no-no according to my design professor, but there seems to be a change of opinion on this matter now.  As long as the rug is large enough, it's a go!

Rug buying rule of thumb...
-If you are putting it near a sofa, make sure its at least a foot or more under the front legs of the couch.  And be sure to have at least 6 inches on either side of the sofa.  Having a rug too small in the room with make the room feel more crowded and less pulled together.
-For a bedroom be sure the rug is a few feet wider than the bed.  Again, there is nothing worse in a design than seeing a rug that is too small.  For a king size bed, for example, nothing smaller than an 8x10 or 9x12.
-When putting under a kitchen table make sure the rug is large enough where the chairs will still be on the rug when pulled out to sit on.
